It’s not often in the modern day watch world that we hear about the story of an Austrian watch brand. And yet, Carl Suchy & Söhne has a great story to tell about the golden days of Austrian watchmaking.
The story of the Viennese watch brand dates back to 1822. Born in Prague in 1796, Carl Suchy spent a fair part of his youth in Germany, training as a watchmaker. Upon his return to Prague, he established his clock manufacture. Soon after, his four sons joined his company, hence the name Carl Suchy & Söhne.
In a short time, Carl Suchy & Söhne soon became the most prominent watchmaker brand of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Carl Suchy’s son Carl Suchy Junior established a pocket watch factory in the cradle of Swiss watchmaking in La Chaux-de-Fonds, while his younger brother Hans established a watch store in the historical center of Vienna.
It didn’t take a long time for Carl Suchy & Söhne watches to find acclaim and make their way into the hands of prominent figures in Austria and around Europe. Besides members of the Royal Court of Austria, past owners of Carl Suchy & Söhne watches include Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, as well as acclaimed artist Gustav Klimt.
After nearly a century of inactivity, Carl Suchy & Söhne is back in the scene of fine watchmaking. Combining Viennese elegance and Swiss precision in a unique and playful design, the Austrian brand is back and more vibrant than ever!
Focusing on one core watchcollection for the time being, Carl Suchy & Söhne have come up with a unique take on the time only watch. Dubbed the Waltz No.1, the watches feature more animation than one would expect from a three hand watch. Inspired by the dancing rhythm of the Viennese Waltz, the dial of the Waltz No.1 watch has a peculiar design where half of the dial features a vertical guilloché motif, while the other half of the dial is horizontal. In place of a small seconds dial and hand, a rotating disk follows the design of the rest of the dial, aligning perfectly for one moment every minute before continuing its hypnotic waltz.
The case of the Carl Suchy & Söhne Waltz No.1 watches, made in either stainless steel or black ADLC steel, features a pebble-like design with smooth curves and alternating sandblasted and polished surfaces, perfectly complementing the concave design of the watch dial. With an ergonomic design and wearable size of 41.5mm case diameter, as well as a slightly domed sapphire crystal that follows the contours of the case, the Carl Suchy & Söhne Waltz No.1 case is a work of art in its own right.
Under the dial of the Waltz No.1 watch beats an automatic mechanical movement with a micro-rotor. Made by the Swiss movement maker Vaucher, who also supply a number of prestigious watch brands and independent watchmakers, the movement is lavishly finished with a sumptuous design that speaks to lovers of fine watchmaking.
The movement can be admired even more in the Carl Suchy & Söhne Waltz No.1 Skeleton, whose dial, still following the half vertical and half horizontal lines of the regular Waltz No.1 collection of watches, features open grooves that allow a glimpse of the automatic movement that drives the watch.
